Hostgator shared hosting is quite feature rich & it allows ssh access. Having ssh access is very handy when you have to move a large chunk of data or for various other activities. However, the SSH access on Hostgator is not enabled by default & you need to make one major change to enable it.
If you are a HostGator hosting user, you should know about this trick as it will come very handy when you are migrating your site to HostGator & also away from Hostgator.
Enabling & using SSH on HostGator Hosting
Login to your HostGator Panel & click on the server where you need to enable ssh access.
On the page, you will see the option to enable shell access. Click on it & it will enable SSH access:
Well, that’s it & this will enable SSH access.
Now to access your server via SSH, you need a client. For the Windows, you can use Putty & for Mac, you can use Mac OS default terminal
However, one important thing that you should know is; use port 2083 for accessing via ssh. I recommend you to enable SSH only when you need it. Otherwise keep it disabled. Just to ensure your Hostgator server remain secure.
